Paris-Lodron Universität Salzburg, Salzburg, Austria - (PLUS)


The Paris Lodron University of Salzburg currently accommodates over 14,000 students and approximately 2,700 staff. As an integral part of both cultural and educational life, the University serves as a meeting place for teaching staff, students and academics, as well as the general public. Since its re-establishment in 1962, the University has continued to meet the highest standards in teaching and research.

The Centre for Geoinformatics (Z_GIS,, an interdisciplinary centre (35 scientific and technical staff) is dedicated to applied research, outreach activities, professional education and training. As experts for the spatial view Z_GIS focuses on interoperable GIS usage, spatial modelling, satellite remote sensing, image analysis, digital cartography and GI-based communication. For the last twenty years, Z_GIS has organized the leading GIS conference in German speaking countries and started three years ago with the international symposium on Geospatial Crossroads. Since 1998 it has been involved in EU-funded RTD activities, development co-operation and educational projects. Z_GIS Research is fostering new technologies for spatial decision support and policy implementation and thereby contributes to more effectively visualizing, understanding, managing and communicating policy-relevant information in a spatially explicit manner. Computer-based methods and tools are applied and adapted to landscape and urban analysis, water and environmental management, crisis and conflict prevention, in the light of sustainable development. A specific methodological focus is the integration of existing geo-spatial data and up-to-date satellite-derived information: the Centre is a Centre of Excellence for object based image analysis. Z_GIS promotes a systemic understanding of multi-scale, multi-dimensional spatial phenomena by targeting its research on both environmental integrity and human security.

zeilPeter Zeil, geophysicist, is senior project manager at Z_GIS with 20+ years of professional experience in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America related to geo-information and remote sensing for resource management covering institution building, organisational development, technology transfer, regional coordination and network building. He has extensive expertise in planning, managing and evaluating projects, having contributed to several evaluations for UNESCO. He is member of the ESA Independent Validation Group for GMES, and is one of the five directors of the African Association for Remote Sensing of the Environment (AARSE).

kienbergerStefan Kienberger received his MSc in Environmental System Sciences – Geography from the University of Graz, Austria and Macquarie University, Australia. His PhD research involved the assessment of vulnerability at the local and district scale in rural Mozambique. His research interests lie in the spatial assessment of vulnerability at different scales and the  integration of methods of GIScience and Remote Sensing. Additionally he has been involved in capacity building projects (GIS) and has work and research experience in Southern Africa, Asia and on test sites in  Europe.


PLUS researchers are responsible for: the integration of interdisciplinary data into a spatial context. PLUS is leading Task 2.3 to derive timeseries of landcover/-use information and provide terrain analysis  data. A further major contribution is a conceptual framework for spatial vulnerability assessment to identify hot spots in WP4 (4.1) and to effectively map disease risks and vulnerability (4.8) as a substantial  element for the development of a decision support system in WP5. PLUS staff will also co-supervise (along with CGIS-NUR) one of the PhDs funded through HEALTHY FUTURES.
